Running an online shop can be tough with so much competition out there. But there’s a clever trick that’s helping shop owners connect better with their customers: it’s called customer grouping. Let’s look at how this works and why it’s such a big deal.

How do you make customer segmentations in Shopify?

Don’t worry if you’re not great with technical. It’s really easy to group your customers in Shopify. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Log in to your Shopify admin panel.
  2. Navigate to “Customers” -> “Segments”.
  3. Click on “Create segment”.
  4. Name your segment (e.g., “Birthday Customers”, “Nearby Customers”).
  5. Then, choose “Create a template”.
  6. It opens up the Templates dashboard where you can search for “Birthday” or “Customer birthday”. You will see a “Customers with a birthday today” template.
  7. Click “Use this template”.
  8. A line of code will show up: anniversary(date: 'metafields.facts.birth_date').
  9. You can change the setting to “customer’s birthday in 10 days” or whatever you prefer.

What you can do with the customer grouping

There are two suggestions for Shopify owners.

The first is to add the discount codes. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Go to Discount -> Add discount
  2. Set up your discount details.
  3. In the “Customer eligibility” section, select “Specific customer segments”.
  4. Choose the custom customer segments

It’s very common to send email marketing to the specific group.

  1. Integrate your Shopify store with an email marketing platform.
  2. Import your “Birthday Customers” segment.
  3. Create a birthday-specific email campaign targeting this segment.

How customer grouping benefits Shopify site

One of the best things about this new way of grouping customers is that you can keep in touch with them over time and strengthen the relationship. Example, for birthdays, you could:

  • Send a message a week before to build excitement
  • Offer a special deal on the day
  • Follow up afterwards to see if they enjoyed their dayCustomer
