How to embed videos in your Shopify product descriptions

Product videos give shoppers a clearer view of what they are buying. They can show scale, movement, texture, packaging, or setup details that are hard to explain with photos alone. You can add a hosted YouTube or Vimeo video to a Shopify product description by copying its embed code and pasting it into the description’s HTML view.

How to set up the video

Start by hosting the video online. YouTube and Vimeo are common choices because they handle playback, compression, and streaming for you. If you use Shopify-hosted product media instead, Shopify’s product media documentation explains how media works across products and collections.

After uploading the video, copy the embed code. On YouTube, click Share, then Embed. YouTube will show a small block of HTML that you can copy into Shopify.

Add the embed code in Shopify

Log in to Shopify admin, open Products, and choose the product you want to edit.

In the product description editor, switch to HTML view. The control may be labelled Show HTML or shown as a </> icon, depending on the editor version.

Paste the YouTube or Vimeo embed code where the video should appear in the description. It can sit before the copy, after the copy, or between two sections.

Switch back to the normal editor view and save the product. The editor may not preview the video, so check the live product page after saving.

Check the live product page

Open the product page on your storefront and confirm that the video loads, fits the page width, and works on mobile.

If the video does not appear, check that the embed code was pasted in HTML view and that the full iframe code was saved. Older Shopify themes can also restrict embedded content in product descriptions, so a theme update or theme-code change may be needed.

What product videos add

Videos help shoppers understand products that need motion or context: clothing fit, furniture scale, installation steps, texture, finish, or how a feature works. That extra context can reduce hesitation before purchase and lower the risk of a mismatch between expectation and delivery.

Keep product videos short and focused. A 30-90 second clip is usually enough to show the main details without slowing the page or distracting from the purchase path. Use good lighting, clear framing, and readable captions for shoppers browsing with sound off.

Video embeds can affect page speed, especially when several videos load on one product page. For performance checks after adding media, read our guide on optimising Shopify video tags for PageSpeed.

Practical takeaway

Embedding a video in a Shopify product description is a small HTML edit: host the video, copy the embed code, paste it into the product description’s HTML view, save, and test the live page. The best product videos answer a specific buying question rather than repeating the written description.
