Bare Biology wanted to remove a familiar bottleneck: someone has a question about the business, but getting an answer means asking a colleague to pull a report, gather the numbers or explain where to look. Small, ad hoc requests interrupt the people who know the systems, while everyone else waits.
For team members without technical or data-analysis training, that dependency can get in the way of exploring an idea or moving a product forward. Bare Biology wanted them to be able to ask questions directly and keep working.
Ask in everyday language
Kahunam built a custom data connector that lets compatible AI assistants retrieve business information through a defined set of reporting tools. Team members can ask in everyday language, without needing to learn a query language or navigate every source system.
The connector includes integrations for Shopify, Skio and Gorgias, covering areas such as sales, inventory, subscriptions and customer support. It uses MCP, a standard that connects AI tools to external data, to make those reporting capabilities available through a conversational interface.
Useful answers, controlled access
Making data easier to use also meant being deliberate about what people and AI tools could access. Giving every user full access to business systems would introduce unnecessary security risks and opportunities to expose personally identifiable information.
The connector provides read-only reporting tools with role-based permissions and an audit log. Defined requests and restricted fields limit what can be retrieved, while aggregated reporting keeps analysis focused on business performance and reduces the need to expose individual customer records.
Those boundaries are built into the connection. The assistant works through the reporting tools available to the user, rather than receiving unrestricted access to the underlying systems.
Fewer requests between a question and an answer
The intended workflow is straightforward: ask a question, retrieve the relevant figures and explore a follow-up. A team member investigating product performance can start with sales reporting and narrow the question as they learn, without commissioning a new report at every step.
This makes room for the small questions that might otherwise sit in a queue or go unasked. It also gives colleagues with specialist knowledge a way to support the wider team without personally handling every routine request for numbers.
